    I presume the next frame would be a big splash as this bird falls full on his face. As you pointed out, the focus is soft but it's still a very fun and interesting capture

    Yes a good example of egret behaviour. I think a lot of the softness is due to a depth of focus problem because it was stretching away from the sharpest focus point.

    Something which often happens with animal photos. If it had stretched it's neck in a different direction you would have probably retained, or even improved, the focus.
