My first picture post - C&C welcome

These are the first pictures I've posted here.

    This is my dog Mona:

    Nikon D7000, 50mm lens, f1.8

    Here is my cat Kate:

    Nikon D7000, 50mm lens, f1.8

    And my other cat Claire:

    Nikon D7000, 50mm lens, f1.8

These were taken on my third day with the Nikon, and my first session with the 50mm prime. Taken about an hour before sunset on my deck and in my yard. I shot them all in aperture priority with a low setting. The cats were both handheld and I shot the picture of the dog using a tripod and remote (with mirror-up).

I'm an absolute newbie with Photoshop so all I did was sharpen them up a bit.

    Thanks for viewing!

And a fine job you've made of them. I think I might have gone for a slightly greater depth-of-field on Mona, to get all of her ionto focus, but the shallow DoF works well on the shots of the cats.

We all start to experiment with all the various tools in our post-processing software as we get to know it better, but I think these images provide a reminder of something to hold onto as you gain that greater experience - get to know when enough is enough on post-processing. We all get tempted to overdo it, just because we can. Sometimes it's a case of less is more.

    Cliff,

These are very nice pictures. I really like the shallow depth-of-field and I especially like the lighting in the picture of Claire. Great job!

Your furry kids are lovely and so are the pictures. I especially like the one of Claire. For Kate I wonder would it be better to have included her ears. Thanks for sharing

Thanks Donald - you are right about the DoF on Mona - that would look better.

    Thanks Helen,

You're right about Kate's ears. I'll have to go back and look at the RAW and see if I have room to restore them.
