Re: Egrets and seagulls
Excellent shots. I like the soft treatment that you used.

Re: Egrets and seagulls
Hi Otavio; a lovely morning to be walking on the beach with your camera. The seagull looks pretty in the early sun, although I think I should have used a faster shutter speed, as he is a little soft; the same with the heron which is blurred; either much faster than 1/640s or maybe pan to get him in focus and leave the background to show the movement. I like your treatment of the backlit egret, although maybe a little more detail in the bird would be better. The snowy egret is overexposed and there again I think that I would have used a shutter speed of more than 1/1000, and stopped down the aperture to at least f9, trying to meter towards the right, (overexposed ) side. White birds in the sun are very tricky, but very rewarding when you get the hang of them. All the best, Gillie

Re: Egrets and seagulls
Hi Gille. Many thanks for your comments, that will surely be considered for next similar shots! Anyway, it seems to me that I'm finding the limits of a superzoom camera (small sensor). Maybe I'll go for a DSLR 1.5 crop sensor! Kindest regards...

Re: Egrets and seagulls
Hi Otavio,
what a great set of pictures. Out walking with your father and having such a great set of subjects to photograph must of been fantastic.
Hope you don't mind but I couldn't resist playing around with one of your shots, I will of course remove it if you would rather I didn't post.
Many thanks for sharing.

Re: Egrets and seagulls
Hi John, I am glad you liked it and yes, it was really a fantastic morning, one example of those things that money just cant buy! I'm absolutely ok with your PP version posted. No problem at all! By the way, you did it perfect! Can you say what software was used and treatment(s) applied? Cheers!

Re: Egrets and seagulls
Otavio,
yes no problem my friend.
I used Adobe Elements 9. The first thing I did was reduce the 'noise' by using the Plug-in 'Neat image' that I added under the Filter tab. This can be download from: http://www.neatimage.com/win/photoshop/index.html?d85 as long as you have Elements 9.
Then I crop as per the posted picture, then used the unsharp mask tool to sharpen; 110% with a radius of 0.8
I then saved the picture and re-opened it in FastStone viewer to add the border. Then saved.
FastStone viewer can be downloaded for Free at www.FastStone.org
Hope this helps.
Kind Regards
John

Re: Egrets and seagulls
Otavio,
if you had taken the pictures with a DSLR, the photos would already be very good. But you photographed with a superzoom camera model that is slow and with very limited manual adjustments. Shooting with a focal length of 840 mm, you really reached the limit of your camera.
Congratulations on your photos.
Antonio.

Dear Antonio, many thanks for your comments! Hopefully, I will "repeat" these shots with a DSLR soon!
