What do you think? CC welcome

I went to see the olympic flame relay in salisbury tonight and they had a fair on. i didnt get anything worth showing of the flame or carrier but i did try a few things with the rides.

What do you think? CC welcome

I was trying to get a sense of speed with this whilst keeping everyone else surrounding the ride looking motionless. it is also the first time i have played with a photo in RAW format so please let me know what you would do differently with the PP also. All edits, modifications and comments welcome

Well done Paul. You'll find that your on a new step of the learning ladder and at times it will feel frustrating. But it is worth it.

You have pulled off your idea very well and have certainly achieved that aim.

Maybe you'd agree that because you got the exposure on the sky just right, the result is that the lower part of the image (where the people are) is under-exposed. That's where your about-to-be-discovered PP skills come into play. I don't know what RAW post-processing software you're using, but hopefully it's one of those with 'fill light' or something similar. If you used that slider then you'd be able to bring detail back into those darker areas.

Good on you for going RAW.

thanks donald. i'll have a look and see if i have a fill light slider or similar. i am using elements 10 so i'll have a play. I'm glad you feel i achieved my aim with the shot im now just trying to work out what sort of crop to do to it. maybe remove the bouncy castle?

In that case you do have a fill light control.

The cropped and lightened version is great. What are the technicals on this shot: camera, lens, f-stop, time, etc? I'm interested since the Crazy Cage has motion and the people don't appear to.

    Much, much better! Great job.

By the way, if there are people in that thing, it's not the cage that's crazy; it's the people.

To answer Ken's question, the EXIF data shows Canon 500D and EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 at 33mm, 1/20s, f/11, iso100 in Shutter priority mode and the cr2 RAW was opened by ACR6.7 and edited in Photoshop Elements 10 (for Windows) - OK, I'm showing off now

    Cheers,

    Paul,

Excellent result ! What makes this picture for me is that your choice of 1/20th sec has almost frozen movement at the centre cone with the outer circumference showing great motion blur but leaving just enough detail of the riders. Did you experiment at different speeds ?

Love the photo! The second crop really makes it work.

Thanks Dave! Now I feel silly in that I have shortcuts for both Opanda EXIF and PhotoMe on my desktop. Duh!! I'm used to working with another group that provides shooting info and jpgs in their posts. Didn't think to copy/paste here.

    Show off!

Great job Paul! I like the cropped version also because you can see the expressions on the faces in the crowd. At 1/20th, I'm wondering did you use a tripod or does the lens have image stabilization?

Thanks for the comments guys. I took about 15 shots at different speeds trying to get the effect I wanted and this one came out clearest and with the result I wanted. The lens does not have IS and there was no tripod used as I only had my camera around my neck whilst taking my daughter to the fair.
Thanks for putting the exif data up dave. I'll start doing that more often in my original post.

The last one you posted was far better, I think. I like the sort-of retro look.
