Multiple mating isn't uncommon in the insect world. Extra males will attempt to push in and insert their 'equipment' between the first male and the female.

I was watching some beetles recently. A 'spare' male kept trying to push the first male off the female. Eventually, they went 'outside' to settle the dispute man to man, with a lot of head butting and general pushing around.

In the meantime, the female just wandered off.
