    Freestyle MotoCross

Managed to snap these guys yesterday as they put on a show at one of our local festivals. I think they are mad but they put on a good show

    Comments welcomed.

Great captures! Were the individual shots cropped from a image like the last?

I absolutely cannot imagine doing anything like those riders...

I think we can agree on that. But, good on them.

And good on you, Karl. Good work to get the exposures so good and nailing the sharpness in the shots. What shutter speed (s) were you using?

    Karl,
    great, sharp and well composed.
I have no idea how or why people do this type of thing, but thankfully they do, allowing people like us to get our cameras out.
    Great set thanks for sharing.

Richard - none of them were cropped. I had my Sigma 18 - 250mm lens on and I set it to about 70mm (from memory) except for the last shot which I stood a bit further back and opened it up wide.

The hard bit was trying to avoid being knocked and pushed by other spectators

Donald - I had the 450D set to Tv mode and used a shutter speed of 1/500th. Unfortunately due to the slow burst rate of the camera I missed many sequences but I tried to do the best I could as I haven't done any shots before when the subject is moving so fast.

James - thanks for that but this was the first time I have done this type of shot (it wasn't planned) so I am happy that they worked out okay and you liked them.

    Hi Karl,

    Good results there.

There's actually a lot to commend this sport from a photographic viewpoint; no distracting backgrounds or blocked views

That said, it'll only work this well on a 'clear blue sky' day - shooting into a bright overcast, or worse, sunlit clouds or the sun itself, would make things far less attractive. That's not to say it is easy even on a good day, so has has been said; good panning skills and general technique.

    Well done,
