Thread: Which Filter?!?

    Which Filter?!?

    Hi Photographers,

I'm looking for a Circular Polariser - which I've found. But I don't know whether to purchase a "Standard" or "Pro1D" or "HD". Standard is cheap$, Pro1D is middle price$, and HD is expen$ive.

HD = Top of the range, hardened glass, lowest profile, scratch, fingerprint resistant. Lets through the most light , only lose about 1 stop.
Pro 1D = (hoya and keno similar quality, most popular is the Hoya). Middle of the range, loss of light is about 2 stops
Hoya Standard = Entry level, very dark, not low profile, blocks about 3 stops of light

Which one should I get? I really can't decide...

    Thanks.

I think of such purchases in terms of going for the best I can afford. For some other items, I don't let 'more expensive = better' be the way I think. But for a purchase like this, I would.

What that means is that I would strive to get above the 'standard' product.

However, there is a limit to how far you push the 'more expensive = better' argument. I'd want to try and find out just how much better the HD is compared to the Pro. Or is the HD maybe more aimed at the movie market? I've always been content with the Hoya 'Pro' range and would have to be convinced that the HD was worth the extra.

Hi, I have used the Hoya Pro 1D and good results, as for brand (and I may be wrong here) Hoya & Kenko are made by the same company but just marketed under differant names.

I also understand that to be true about Hoya & Kenko. I actually heard that it was the result of an old family split that ended up in there being two companies instead of one. Dunno how true that is but I have been assured that they are the same product with different names.

I have been quite satisfied with the quality of Hoya Pro filters, although I use primarily B+W Schneider products. I have recently been quite happy with the Calumet house brand CPL. The manager of my local Calumet store assures me that Calumet sub contracts their top-line filters to Schneider. I cannot verify this but, the Calumet filter has done well for me...
