I think you have a valid point here.
FWIW, when I have the 70-300mm fitted for wildlife, I wouldn't mind betting that about 70% are taken at 300mm - but that's just the nature of the subject - nearly always too far away.
However, when I have the walkabout town 18-200mm on, I am sure I use any focal length as necessary and I doubt analysis would show any great prevalence at either end of the range.
If I need longer, I can always pop on the 70-300mm, if I need wider, I don't currently have anything that fits, so may be I'm wrong
