Re: Sean gets White Washed
Diane,
I like the second image best. It seems to get the crest of the wave in the best location of the image. If Sean had a big expression on his face it may have changed things but he was bracing for a wave as I would probably be doing at the moment. I am stuck in a hard light thing right now and favored that in this case. I adjusted some highlight and shadow levels, added an orange filter, followed by a tick of sharpening. Here is what I came up with. Hope you don't mind me giving this a go.

Wow Scott! I love that it really makes the wave take over which is what I wanted. Your take shows me there is more that can be done with this, as a Mom I tend to get focused on my "baby."
Thanks
Diane

As well you should! If he had some crazy look on this face I would had fiddled around with the third crop.
Keep shooting!

Like Scott, I think the 'midway' version is definitely how you should treat this image. Because as you've acknowledged the image is about the wave AND your son, not just one or the other. And to that end, it's super.
Scott's re-work has brought out the texture in the wave. But it has caused your son's face to lose detail and be much more in shadow. I'd be wondering about putting a layer mask on Scott's version bringing back the skin tones of your original; i.e. letting them come back through.
