    This seems counter-productive...

I am not a great fan of ring lights but, I was just doing a bit of web surfing and came upon this model...

    https://thephotogadget.com/en/conten...non-nikon-sony

It seems to me that a ring light which doesn't surround the lens will provide the faults (the horrible donut shaped catchlights) and none of the advantages (virtual shadow free shooting) of a ring light...

The text seems to say that you do put it onto the lens. But why do we only see graphics that show it on the hot shoe. Call me an old sceptic, but this describes itself as a gadget and that is exactly what it seems to be. 'Gimmick' is another words that springs to mind. For $34.90 you are going to get $34.90 worth of product. And good artificial light costs a lot more, in my opinion.

I think some people actually like the doughnut catchlights

This, being basically an LED torch, doesn't need to connect to the hotshoe, that's just one of two ways to mount it.

I have determined that my ones (I got a square variety) are most useful for lighting macro items, it would get the light source closer to the subject than my tripod bush bracket, but they can spook insects.

    Cheers,
