Great Blue Heron Fight

Hello All,

On the way back to my office Tuesday I saw this juvenile Great Blue Heron trying to eat a fish that was a little to big for him. So, I pulled over and got my camera stuff out and hoped he would still be there once I got in position to take some pictures. He was and I got a couple before he gave up and moved on. I was about to pack it up and was just going to take one or to more when this happened.

The whole thing took about 45 seconds and I was caught so unaware that I just held down the trigger and kept going till my buffer filled. All in all I got 33 pictures of the fight. These are some of the more dramatic of the bunch.

Nice captures for sure! Other than in the nest it is not often I have seen two in a single frames space. Way to put yourself in a great spot and be aware enough to catch it. Half the battle with wildlife I think. Well done Rob.

Thanks everyone for the positive feedback. Yes, I feel I was in the right place at the right time. I was pretty sure I had my settings right, but I couldn't wait to get home and on my computer to see what I got!!!

George,
I think they were both ok. They did their thing and then parted ways. Looking at them now in the pictures I’d would say that they are both juveniles and it was nothing serious.
But I’m no expert! I would have been happy with just the bird and fish and I feel truly blessed to have been able the catch this action. I will post a couple more soon.

Rob that was a great series. I thought I would share a couple pics I took , one bird dropped the fish and another bird swooped in and took it. It was mostly a lot of chase .
