Mousehole Habour (Panorama)

Mousehole Harbour on a sunny August day. This is a very old Cornish fishing village, attracting many visitors each year. Mousehole was attacked by the Spanish Armada on July 23rd 1595.

Very nice Chris. I like the varous angles of the boats, the eye travels around them smoothly and there is variety across the image making the pano worthwhile. The clouds make the sky interesting too. Were the individual pics shot with a lens at a wide angle - has that kind of feel. I really enjoy this kind of scene.

What an interesting harbor that is! No docks, just simple mooring lines laid out in a very organized
pattern. There also appears to be a lack of dory's or dinghy's..how do people access their boats?

It's a gorgeous image, but is that horizon slightly tilted to the left?

I thought so too at first, then wondered if it was in fact curvature, possibly due to wide lens??

I think its curvature as well as David. I used a Canon EF 17 - 40 f4 L USM lens at a focal length of 28 mm. To answer Mike's question Mousehole, like all old place, is all over the place in both levels and vertical terms that it is very difficult to strike a fair balance.

It's a lovely scene, but you definitely need to straighten that horizon.

It looks like it needs a slight CW rotation, but then the white building on the right will be out somewhat. You may need to correct the distortion as well.

Chris, I had a little play with it in Photoshop using the deform function on the transform tool. I managed to straighten it all out quite nicely and it looks a lot better. I was going to post it but, as you are working on it, I'll let you post yours instead

Lovely harbour- good strong colours too - it's a great lens that 17-40. We're going in November -Poldhu Cove again- so we'll see if we can get to Mousehole, just further along the coast.

I used to stop in Poldhu Cove on the caravan site Very nice at sunrise.

Hi Christopher, I was wondering what it was about this image and other panoramas I've seen that didn't look quite right so I opened it in Photoshop and realized that the horizon is bowed upwards in the center. I gave a try at straightening it using Edit/Transform/Warp to lift the edges and this is how it came out. I hope you don't mind my edit.



This behavior brings up an interesting point. When you shot this image, do you recall if the camera was pointed slightly downwards?

EDIT: Duh! I just noticed that Tommy was working on this as well. Sorry! Didn't mean to jump the gun. I should have read the entire post first. <red faced>

That's nice, like it bigger Chris.

Only very minor distraction I find myself drawn to, is the dark dirty mark on the wall on extreme right foreground towards the top, a minor clone job.

There is a slight horizon bend still, but it doesn't worry me.
Nice strong composition with all those mooring lines pinting to the entrance.

Hi Chris,

I didn't keep the one I played with so I did it again on your latest edit. The horizon is still bent on it so, like Frank, I used the warp tool in Photoshop to straighten it. I also played a little with the levels to increase the contrast a touch (but that's a personal preference, I don't think there is anything wrong with your processing on that front). It's a lovely image. Oh, and I got rid of that black stain for Dave I also sharpened it just a touch, but you don't really see that unless you view it full (right click on the image and hit "view image" and then click on it to zoom on it).

Don't be daft Frank! I don't mind, and I'm sure Chris doesn't mind! The more views and opinions you get on an image the better IMO

Hi Chris,

I too had saved the image and had a play with it in Lightroom to straighten
the horizon..latest rendition looks spot-on..

Still wondering however how people access their moored boats..I do see a couple of
dinghy's moored deep, and it makes me wonder if there is a "universal boat taxi" that is
available. (No worries, it's just one of those odd, curious things I seem to ponder...lol)

Mike - The harbor dries out at low tide so most of the boats are accessible on foot. There are numerous dinghies and inflatable craft around too. Also the still active fishing boats and some larger craft are moored up against the inner wall of the harbour and can be accessed from there.
