    Can Anyone Identify This Flower/Plant?

Found it at the State Park (NW Florida-USA) yesterday and though I have lived in this area since 1972, I cannot say I've ever seen the likes of this. This is a huge migratory bird sanctuary, so it is quite possible it has been transplanted from some exotic locale.

Ball is about 1 1/2" in diameter (37mm).

    Hi Chris,

    Lovely photo

I'm still trying to find a positive ID, but it looks as if it might be some kind of Scabiosa (pincushion flower). I do know that they grow in Florida. I'll let you know if I discover something more certain. I'm not that good on IDing things outside the islands

    Cheers,

    Seri

Update: scrap scabiosa. Leaves are all wrong Still looking

    Cephalanthus occidentalis (buttonbush).

    I hope

According to Wiki it's native to eastern and southern North America, and 'Waterfowl and other birds eat the seeds. Wood Ducks utilize the plant as nest protection. Deer browse the foliage. Insects and hummingbirds take the nectar, with bees using it to make honey'.

Makes it worth hanging around it with a camera

    Cheers,

    Seri

I think you are right on the money...I think I probably found the same answer just a few minutes ago but have sent an email to the state park rangers for confirmation. Thanks for the looksee.

Not a clue about the name of the plant, but, wow, what a super shot! "A rose by any other name..." (Oh no! I just caught myself quoting Shakespeare--something I vowed never to do.)

Looks like a Buttonbush to me... they have a lot at Great Falls park in Virginia. They are very good at attracting butterflies. Not to mention just really unique looking!
