    Hummingbird with fill flash

This one is almost full frame, from about 6 feet. I need more light to get my shutter speeds up and more depth of field (would like to have about f/11)

    Canon 40D
    Canon 300f/4L + 1.4TC
    1/200s
    f/8
    iso 1250
Flash camera mounted (430 ex II)
    Manual mode
    1/64 + 0.3 Power
    Distance about 6 feet

Fascinating image, Steve. Like bumble bees, you'd think that wings that small couldn't lift a body that large in flight, let alone be able to hover perfectly motionless in the air!

    Hummingbird with fill flash 100%.

Our hummingbird population seems to have moved on to greener pastures, apparently in expectation of the coming Fall weather. Hope you don't mind, but I'm learning from your photos Steve, and plan to put that to work come next Spring when they return to our backyard feeders.

What is your aim Steve? To completely freeze every moving part of the bird, while keeping it all in focus?

How underexposed is it in the RAW file? Do you have to bring it back much?

Anyways, I'd certainly like to see that image, if that's what you're after, and if and when you get it, but with that aside this shot you have just posted is phenomenal. I don't see how it's possible to improve on it much. If at all. Massive respect

The detail on its head is very very nice! Good photo.
