10 different values?

I think what Chris is making reference to is the spread of tonal values within the scene he was photographing. This relates back to Ansel Adams' Zone System. There are lots and lots of explanations about it out there in the ether. This is one of them.
In his book, 'The Complete Guide to Black & White Digital Photography' (Ilex, 2009), Michael Freeman writes about the Zone System, "... (the) Zone System never seems to go away, despite the fact that it was invented for a highly specific kind of photography that very few people ever practiced ... (but it is) ... a useful way of thinking about and assessing scenes and images." (p166)

I love that sort of image where it's all about line, shape, tone and texture. I think you got it!
Thanks Donald...I should have included your explanation with my description.
Chris,
I like the image. I have seen alot of these as I grew up within 50 miles of the area. I have a feeling you were in the Blue Ridge mountains. I have seen alot photos of them but is one of he best I have seen.
