Metadata missing from psd files
I am using Bridge and Photoshop and sometimes find a psd file does not carry over the keywords assigned to it in Bridge.
Once the RAW file is in Bridge my workflow there is to add keywords, star ratings and a colour label in Bridge and then I would normally use the option “Open With Photoshop” which opens via Adobe Camera Raw but sometimes I might choose the option Open Using Camera RAW. I don’t see any difference in these alternative approaches.
Having edited the file, I would save it using the Save As option. That way I can save the file in the psd format with a different filename that identifies it as a work in progress or a master file depending on the stage reached.
If I want to save it as JPEG (for when Photoshop files cannot be used) I use the Save a Copy option choosing that file format and high quality.
Sometimes the metadata does not get saved with the file and Bridge does not allow me to add it to a psd file. I can add it in Photoshop using File Info but that does not get shown in Bridge.
I suspect the issue is related to the xmp sidecar file becoming detached from the psd file at some stage but have not been able to work out when or how that occurs.
It is a bit of a mystery and I doubt this behaviour is as random as it appears.

Re: Metadata missing from psd files
does this happen regardless of whether you save as PSD or JPEG?

Re: Metadata missing from psd files
This may not be relevant to your problem. I download Raw images from my camera using Convert to DNG which avoids having those potential xmp sidecar issues but recently I have found that one or two DNG conversions have not worked correctly so I have returned to saving as CR2, although I prefer the more compact DNG. So far I have only recently done a few downloads from my camera but everything seems to me working OK.
Like you, I save my master copies as psd and Save a Copy for JPEG etc. I will try to check my JPEG images to see if I have a similar problem.
Have you recently done a Photoshop update?

Re: Metadata missing from psd files
Thank you for your replies Dan and Geoff.
In the original post I was referrring to images that I had recently edited and were mostly focus stacking excercises which had many layers.
I now find that the keywords have appeared in Bridge for all files that were previoulsy noted as missng the keywords.
This is most strange, but I can only guess that it is either something to do with closing and reopening Bridge or a delay in building the necesasry files/cache/previews.
Although the problem appears to have resolved itself, I will be alert to such behaviour in future and if it recurs try to identify the root cause and solution.
