Today we said farewell to one of our dogs, Noche' a seven year old Bouvier des Flandres. At age 3 she had a limb amputation for an aggressive bone cancer. Even with three legs she participated in obedience, herding and scent competition. A fierce competitor. We will miss her. Here is a picture of her in better days.

Sorry for your loss, Paul. Their passing certainly leaves a void in one's life. I love that second shot. Likely only fully appreciated by dog lovers.

I agree...the second shot for me too, Paul. Once they come into our lives, it is sometimes hard to let go...even if it is for their own good. Sorry.

Izzie and Dan, thanks for the kind words. The veterinarian came to the house which took some of the sting out of the whole process. She died peacefully in my wife's arms. Her buddy Nikki (puppy) came down to check things out as the vet recommended. Today she is not herself. She misses her buddy.

Paul David... The passing of a friend and soulmate is difficult to endure. I have lost several dogs in my life that were extremely close to me and think that I can imagine what you have gone through...
IMO... It is good for you and your wife that you have Nikki. And, as I understand it, dogs can accept the death of a dog friend but not being abandoned by the friend... I would guess why the vet suggested that Nikki should be involved...

Three years ago we debated whether we were doing her any good by having such an aggressive procedure and relegating her to spend the rest oh her life as a three legged dog. It took her a while to recover but she did and lived a good three years. Th

Nikki is doing well but she does keep looking for her buddy. My daughter is visiting with her dogs so they are having a good time.

The debate is always so hard. Did she have osteosarcoma? Three years is fantastic, although it's never long enough . I've heard the adapt really well on three. We are deciding on the same for our yellow. You gave her an extension on a wonderful life, and that is amazing.

Awful disease. You did the right thing. She sounds like she had an amazing few years. I am very sorry for your loss.

Sharon, thanks. This dog lived longer than a lot of humans with the same diagnosis. We see a fair number of these where I work and the prognosis is not good.

Yeah, all too aware. It's a very awful cancer. I think about 10,000 a year.
Your pup was amazing.

We had had several rescue "tripod_ (three legged) dogs all of which lost their limbs from being hit by cars. All of them did extremely well on three legs.
