Nice colours John, great light angle showing the texture of the wings too.

Given the need to leave the framing as it is for the centre of the flower, I think I would actually give this a little more space top and right.

Being really picky, it would have benefited from f/11 or f/16, you're only at 100 iso on a 5D Mk.IV, so should be plenty ISO available without encountering noise.

Thank you for your feedback, Dave. I agree with your comments on the composition, unfortunately, I do have any room on the right side of the frame - user error in composition (I could try to expand the right side in Photoshop - making up the pixels). f/11 or f/16 would have given me a bit more DOF to bring the flower and last bit of the tail into focus - I was hand-holding the camera and was trading off aperture for shutter speed (should have bumped the ISO up some). Just got this camera, so I am having some fun learning the bells and whistles.

I do play on the dark side... would you consider toning down the petals just a touch?

That's a nice shot as it stands John. Colourful flowers always distract and when the subject is grey to boot, I guess it's bound to be a slight problem. You could crop it a bit more tightly. That would have the benefit of removing the additional distraction of the centre of the bloom and that small white patch below it. Something like:

I agree with John's (2) cropping too, John. Very pretty butterfly, concrete colour...I have not seen one of this before.
