Temples

A distinct difficulty when traveling in Asia is that it is sometimes difficult to get somewhere when the light is good - and get home afterwards. So many photos are taken at the 'wrong' time and must suffice.

This first is on the on the outskirts of the town of Mingun, some miles above Mandalay . Since the 'opening' of Myanmar, Mandalay has become a tourist hotspot and day trips are rampant. The only way to get to Mingun is by boat. We rented one and left about 7 am and got there mid-morning but the sun was already way high in the sky.



This shot was earlier in the trip in Bagan - one of the most beautiful places in the world. Three thousand temples and prayer structures on a plain alongside the Irriwady. (and tourists for every temple)

I was there in 2007 and the change is enormous. Staying late is possible because sunsets from the tops of the temple are wonderful.

Can't see the first image for some reason but I like the second image a lot Lew. I am not particularly keen on bright suns on horizon but in this case, with the road taking you through the comp in that direction, it works.

Mind you, after three weeks there you never want to see another Pagoda in your life The first image would, IMHO, have been much better if the whole temple had been captured, the people in the river certainly add to the image so I think 4:3 horizontal would have worked much better.

I agree that Myanmar is surely that. I've been 4 times, and loved every time. The recent tourist influx has made traveling there much harder with every place strained to the limits. We were lucky in that, because I was shepherding a small group, I had made reservations or we would be sleeping on floors somewhere, as so many did who remembered the old Myanmar where you could breeze into town and find a room anywhere.

In regards the shot. Yes, I think the entirety of Mya Thein Pagoda would look much better (I do have those) but I did want to show people in the same shot so that the contrast between the size and glory of the building and the realtive poverty of the local inhabitants would be evident.

But, since you'd like the building in its entirety, here it is.

Thanks Richard. I have just put Myanmar in my bucket list. The only thing I have of that place so far is a jade bracelet and a jade necklace. My DIL's family friend have a jade store there and said that jade is well known produce of Myanmar.

Lots of visitors from Australia in Myanmar and everywhere else in Asia. I've seen the jade but I'm not much of a shopper. My travel is always by local bus with a camera bag and pack so I rarely buy 'stuff.'
