    Elie

Nice big blocks of tone and strong lines, drew me to make this image.

I went out with one body (7DMkII) and one lens (100-400 f4.5-5.6 L IS MkII), in order to force myself to look for and see long-lens opportunities.

I was also in a place (the East Neuk of Fife) that has great association with people I have and do care for very much. This image and another I think is worth keeping from the day, are inspired by my feelings for those people both past and present.

Breaking out of my 1:1 format and going to 7:5.

As always, your thoughts and comments are appreciated.

I love the lines and the various shades of gray...

That lens is a great one. I have fallen in love with mine. It is so much fun to use!

I find I that I will wander off with a single lens when I am looking to get my photographic creativity going. Restricting myself this way usually means I come back with something interesting. It seems to have had the same effect on your photography.

The one thing I really notice is how two-dimensional this image looks. This is really nothing more that the compression from using a long focal length, but it does present this urban landscape scene in a somewhat unusual way.

This was at 263mm - on a 1.6 crop factor body.

Thanks Donald. Using over a 400mm FF equivalent focal length is definitely not a standards shot. You obviously had a nice long, clear unobstructed view of this location to pull off this shot.

I like this style a lot. My only thinking regarding potential change is that you could probably pull out a lot more darker detail in the bright walls that would display their texture. On the other hand, you might not want to do that.

Glad you picked up that point, Mike, because that was something I really looked at closely. For the final image I actually reduced the contrast and wound back on the 'structure' on those walls in order to take texture out of them. I felt the 'block' of single tone was more what I was wanting to show. But on a different day, in a different mood, I may well have sought to 'up' the texture.

I do like this one Donald as you said lots of strong lines and tones, it looks like you were out and about on a very nice day. If it were my image I would probably lose the power/telephone lines which are across the flagpole at the left side but leaving the flagpole in-situ. However a purist would probably say they were there so they stay.

Nicely composed and executed, Donald. Interesting that you intentionally did not pull more detail out of the walls. That would have been my natural inclination but I find this image very effective as is. Well done.

I think one reason we tend to be more creative when we limit ourselves to a single lens/body is that our mind isn't as distracted thinking about the technical aspect of things. We simply concentrate on finding an interesting scene that fits with what we are carrying.

Considering that I use prime lenses except for my 12-24mm zoom lens, I find it actually amusing that people are referring to the use of a lens that zooms to four times its smallest focal length a limitation.

Donald, I love texture but had you done that to the buildings it would have been a mistake. As per usual with your B&W photos- impeccable.

    Re: Elie

I like it. The bright walls did not worry me as I was happy with the overall tonal range. On reading Mikes comment on texture I had a look at it again and decided he had a point because as well as showing a fraction more texture it would increase the contrast between the walls and the white window frames.

You are incredibly lucky that the stone wall starts in the bottom left corner...

You display your fine hand as you push this hot to it's limits without exaggerating anything. Superb.

Very nice - you've made quite an ordinary street into a beautiful picture. I like the powerlines too - they seem to be in the right place.
