    300mm f/4L IS

I shot my first airshow using a 70-200mm f/4L IS lens with a 1.4x extender (280mm or 448mm equivalent on a crop camera). Over the last couple of years, I have been shooting with a 300mm f/4L IS lens (480mm equivalent) and achieved these pretty dramatic images...

I purchased the 300mm f/4L IS and the 400mm f/5.6L lenses from a friend who sold these lenses in order to fund faster glass for night football. I am now selling both of them in order to fund my new 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II lens...

Great shots. You are going to really enjoy the new lens. I've owned the MKI for several years. It's no slouch but the new generation IS and the AF performance of the MKII has been pushing me to consider buying one.
I would miss the push-pull zoom but can adapt.

Jim, what shutter speed did you use for this excellent shot of the propeller aircraft...

    Thanks, Donald.

I am going to do a lot more airplane photography with my new 100-400mm f/4.5L IS II lens AND my sun shield clothing of which I have two types of face shields, developed for my fishing adventures but easily adapted to sunny air shows...

I often wear the above "neck gaiter" along with my Aussie Stockman brimmed hat, rather than this ball cap with the mesh back.

The above hat and facepiece gives even more protection against the sun...

I just can't stop off at a bank on my way home from a photo shoot wearing this garb. Probably wouldn't be appropriate for airline travel either

Before I started wearing this type of protection, I did very little outdoor work (or fun) due to recurring skin cancers around my face. That is the bane of a ruddy complexion in the tropics or desert areas...

I have three shirts like this (in different colors) which daughter and son-in-law gave me on 2 birthdays and a Christmas.

I even have a pair of sunscreen fingerless gloves. I am wrapped up like a mummy but, safe from those UV rays

    Richard,

This was shot at 1/200s. 400mm ISO 200 f/14 which I never shoot at. I dialed that in by mistake.
I usually stop down to f/7.1.

    Thanks Jim,

I like how you kept the props blurry rather than freezing them...

I like to keep SS no higher than 1/320" for prop planes.

Awesome images of aircraft. I appreciate the tip on speed to get the prop spinning. When I can next get to an air show I will apply some of what you have shared! I hope you have great success with your 100-400 lens!
