Well done ,at me it was a cloudy night.I should apply High pass filter two times.First at 2-3 pixels and then with maximum,250 pixels

I like this version better, John...what I missed on this kind of shot is a foreground...not much of the stars as they can be put in later on in Photoshop and then lessened by cloning out some and blurring others...pretty much like a composite, if you like...just a thought on post processing...remember making rain in Photoshop? pretty much the same process, so to me a foreground will be much more ideal...

Anyway, looking at your EXIF, you used a 70-300mm and yet your focal length 550mm. how did that go about?

    Hi Izzie,

Thanks for commenting. I did take a few shots with some foreground subject matter but the exposure on the moon was way off. I used a 2X tele-extender for this capture.

I'm not a great fan of the yellow colour cast in your image, John. I can't ever remember the moon being that yellow.

    Hi Manfred,

I found the original tones a bit dull.

I like it but are surprised at the settings, it must be very bright. I'm interested in why it is called a blue moon; I've heard the expression, 'only if there is a blue moon' or something like that, but didn't think there was actually a blue moon.

There are two definitions of a Blue Moon, my understanding was that it was two full moons within a month. This was taken very early in the morning.

Thanks...I have yet to master using my 2X...It doesn't seem to cooperate with me and my FF camera.

Anyway, why don't you do a composite and replace the way-off moon exposure with this one you have here? I just saw an image the other days of a foreground in Forest Park here where the moon is really big and the foreground subject are just sillouette-d. It was so beautiful...and dreamy..

    Izzie,

It took awhile to get used to the 2X, it doesn't fully auto focus across the focal length of my 70-300mm lens, it will totally focus when using LiveView though.

    Thanks for the suggestion.
