Oh Deer - The best I could do

We get some fantastic deer photos on this site. Well this feeble attempt is the best I could do.

Oh Deer - The best I could do

I had a macro lens plus 1.4x converter which gave me around 250 mm and they were across a field. As soon as I pointed the camera; that's right, they were off at high speed and straight over the hedge!

So just for a bit of fun, I've posted my quick handheld shot.

I have the best luck when I talk to them.

    Geoff,
If you'd like, give me a day or so and I'll post a pic of the deer here, sitting up and begging. They're like large, dewy eyed rats here. That said I can remember when, as a kid, the sight of a deer (due to their rarity) would have been hypnotic. I think you have a good image in that it shows appropriate deer behavior; running away from people. I swear we're only months away from the darn things coming up and knocking on doors asking for handouts.

My first thoughts were -- Why didn't you make one of those multiplicity shots??? This one you have here has the potentials for it...as it is you caught the first and caught your breath a bit only to click at the last shot...and I like your title for the humour it brought...thanks for the morning chuckles...

First get over the barbed wire fence then through the wheat field.

I was underneath a tree and all I did was to lift my camera; but possibly something else spooked them. It is an area which is frequently used by off the lead dog walkers so the deer are probably a bit nervous.

Incidentally, a few years ago there was a friendly one which I could approach and have a conversation with him. But I think he was eventually killed in a car accident.

I was thinking about taking my big zoom for bird life but went for a smaller landscape lens as my alternative to the macro lens. And there were a couple of potential bird shots which I had to try with the macro lens; but I haven't attempted to edit them yet.

ps. I do have a couple of other deer images on my other keeper shot so maybe I could create a 'herd'.

Just for a laugh, here is the full herd.

ps. In the other shot there was an enormous black bird sitting on that old concrete post. I assume it must have been a raven; a few do live in that area.

Visit Colorado where they are a protected species ... I walked through one herd and I think I was more afraid than they were.

Now...now...that is a herd of them four? I've seen about 11 of them here somewhere. A friend of ours from the Mercedes Benz Club invited us to their house one time and a deer came and his wife went out to feed them on her hands, then two, then three...they all came, all eleven of them and I kept taking pictures. It was fun for a while, but I do not like the place where they live that they are not allowed to have fences...

As for your shot, that was fun too...Now it looks better with 4 of them in different poses...cuties.
