    Landscapes & Daffodil's

A couple of landscape shots which I don't think are the best views but I did like the colours (bit of an Edvard Munch skies?), and I thought I'd try my hand at some flower shots so I took a couple of the lone Daffodil in my garden.

I haven't cropped any of these as I am try to work on composing the shot through the camera and reducing the amount I crop.

    C&C welcome.

Hi Matt, your landscapes are so nice , the second one with a painterly look is my fav. Shooting flowers is something different from shooting landscapes. I would suggest you should buy a macro lens for your comfort if you are really into it . But I have to tell you that people say that shooting macro is addictive and you might give up shooting your lovely landscapes !

Thanks Binnur, those flowers were actually shot with a macro lens. I don't think I'd give up shooting landscapes, its just a bit of variety

Matt, No 2 is the one that really stands out here, very nice image.

As a trial I put it in PS and added some LCE (local contrast enhancement) on a gradient so that the foreground was affected the most, cropped to remove a bit of the sky and placed a white canvas around it. It's a wall hanger I think, those colours work so well.

As for the flowers, I miss seeing these in the UK and knowing that summer is on its way.

Yes, I very much agree. The bare tree helps to make it.

Cheers Grahame, would you post it up.

I've been working on an "oil-painting" style treatment... I'm still not sure about the effect though:

Here it is Matt, nothing major and although this is a 16:9 ratio it also works with less sky cropped.

Great composition especially on no.2 nicely executed Mark. Grahame's crop works really well.

My favourite is #2 too, Matt. I am also having a hard time trying to photograph my daffodils...they are growing very well in some spots in my garden and I tried very hard yesterday and it came out like yours here...I will try to do it again tomorrow...in the sun.

Thanks Izzie, I think I will leave the flowers to the experts

That's really admirable for a couple of reasons. The less we crop, the larger the print can be. The more we get everything right in the camera today by design, the more we can get it right tomorrow and every tomorrow after that.

Do you by any chance have a version of the second image that displays more space to the left of the tree?

If these sky images are exercises in capturing particular colors then you've done well. With the first two images, try to determine if you are displaying lines, textures, colors or a combination of all three and use whatever you can to emphasize the elements most important to you.

Your landscape shots make me want to visit Wales -- so pretty. #2 is my favorite. Matt, did you have a filter on your lens for the landscape shots?

I agree with Mike - a noble endeavor! I find using a tripod helps me do a better job at in-camera composing, I backslide often shooting hand-held. And some very nice results. The second shot is very nicely composed, and it does illustrate that the one PP step often needed, despite good composing in the viewfinder, is to alter the aspect ratio.

You should visit Kim! No I did not have a filter for these shots. The only filter I use is an ND Filter for long exposure shots.

    Hi Matt

The second landscape is terrific, with colours to die for. I could look at this all day. The 16:9 from Grahame works well too, including the white border.

    Dave

PS Forget about the oil painting effect on this one !
