A Sunrise without Sun

Don't you just hate it when you get up early for a sunrise shot and get to site only to find there is so much cloud you won't get much out of the sun ! Anyway, I tried to get something out of this one and would be interested to see if you think "it's a keeper". Shot at Forster on the central NSW coast.

At the risk of being obvious, of course this is a keeper -- quite a bit better than just a keeper!

Consider toning down the bright tones in the sky and reflected in the sea on the left so the brightest area of the sky is at the point of land. Perhaps also brighten that bit of light at that point of land. That's because there is such a nice imaginary diagonal line connecting the nearest point of rocks on the left with the distant point of land on the right. That diagonal along with bright light in that area of the sky will lead our eye very nicely through the image.

Mike interesting comments, the diagonal line to which you refer is one feature of the image I do like. Here is a modified version in line with your suggestions and also a cropped version which I had already toyed with and which I think gives more emphasis to this diagonal line.

At the risk of just repeating what everybody else has already said This is most definitely a keeper. There is so many possibilities with this shot. You could edit it in numerous different ways and it will always look amazing. A real special photo.

On a personal note. I prefer the original edit. The one with the dramatic sky and the small line of rocks. The edited one takes something away from the shot in my opinion.

Indeed Dan, couldn't agree more. And win or lose with the shot, just being out in the fresh air is very pleasant (in our sensible climates anyway).
