    A Snowy Day

I enjoy photographing in the snow and today provided the opportunity to do so. This photo was taken on the National Elk Refuge in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

Great shot, Chuck. Doesn't look like the snowed messed with your focus! I love the mix of snow and vegetation too.

Everything about this works so well for me. The only thing I dislike is that it got my monitor wet.

Thanks Terri and Mike. I'll post a photo of a dry towel that you can use on your monitor.

I have to say that this is a good one Chuck. Some of the first things that strike me about it is the great framing with the goat at a great front angle and off to the side of the frame, looking into it. The composition is excellent in those ways. There are similar colors throughout the image, that's great too, and of course the subject is neat. It looks to me as though you shot this with a short lens, was was your length? Also, I'm not sure if there ever was much detail in the snow in the FG, and a strip further back in the image, so it may or may not reveal more texture in it, but you could try reducing the highlights a bit maybe.

Thanks John and Nick, There was not much detail in the snow. Actually the light conditions were challenging. In addition the falling snow messed with the auto focus. I was using an 80 - 400 mm lens and shot this at 80 mm. As per your suggestion I've played around with the highlights and white settings. Not much change.

Excellent shot with great composition Chuck! I got the snow also, but it was also very cold, so I didn't get out to play with the camera.

I like the framing very much in this one...excellent composition here, Chuck! +1 to Nick's comment...I could have said the same comments along with the observation + add that the two others balances this shot very well too....love it, Chuck...

Very nice shot Chuck May I ask how you shot this without getting your camera wet, did you use an umbrella or what ? Last friday, I was near a waterfall and trying to shoot some leaves (I will upload them soon), my new camera and lens started to get wet by some waterdrops and I kept wiping the waterdrops and shooting ,but at last I got a warning message on my LCD screen saying that ' error in connection between the camera and lens, please clean it' , then I stopped shooting . When I got back home I tried some shots at home and I got the same warning. I wiped my camera and lens with a soft towel carefully and the next day I was able to shoot again without any problem. I'm happy that I didn't ruin my new camera

Thanks to all for your comments and encouragement. Binnur, I didn't worry about getting the camera wet. The snow was relatively dry and the camera and lens were at air temperature so I didn't have to deal with a lot of liquid water. I glad your camera was not damaged.

80 mm seems quite close for a wild animal like this, but in situations where you can use it, I like it. It really does make the subject look close, more than a telephoto does. Were you in a car? I was curious is there snow on the lens, or is the puff in front of the goat it's breath?
