    A Taste of Melbourne

Here are a few shots I took the other day in Melbourne. It was reasonable light but a bit hazy so I have tried to make best use of those conditions.

The first shot is looking along the Yarra River towards the Princess Bridge. I have deliberately added a vignette to this one.

The second shot is looking out from Flinders St railway station. I was taken by the layering - the busy street, the churches, the modern buildings and the sky.

The third is the iconic Flinders St railway station and the fourth is the (not so iconic ?) Federation Square.

Your comments would be most welcome.

PS : Izzie, if you are looking, I hope I am not making you homesick !

    Re: A Taste of Melbourne

I just got out of Melbourne last Saturday for a very short visit but I have not been to the city for quite a while...just in MacLeod and surrounds...and down St. Kilda and my place at Sandringham. Too little time...It feels like shooting through. I will go back just after the New Year. Sending stuffs via Fed-ex will kill my pocket book this Christmas...

I love all your shots here...I have one similar to the second and third one. The second one is a popular shot I suppose...I was standing in front of the pokies club there a little bit more to the left of where you were, just near the bridge and took mine with the trams and all...very very busy place in the morning after the trains arrives. I am not so keen on Federation Square at all. I think it is too tourisy or something. I would rather go to Burke St. where they have the buskers. It was just like me to get myself acquainted with the piano player there (who originally came from Brisbane actually..) I missed him when I go there and not see him. As for Flinders St., I wonder if that guy on the wheel chair is still there conning some tourists? An Age photographer once shot him walking normally and made it second page of the papers once...

Nice series Dave. Love the composition in the first and hustle and bustle in the second.

One of the things that I throughly enjoy about this forum is that i can be an armchair traveler and see the world, albeit through other's eyes. I have never been to Melbourne, and doubt that I would even ever make it to Austrailia.

So, thank you. I can smell the exhaust and hear the car horns in #2. The station in #3 is a stunner, and given that, your series does not fail to please.

Thanks for your comments Izzie, Greg, John, Binnur, John (2), Marie and Vaez.

Izzie your comment about the second shot is interesting. Here I was thinking I'd just come up with this original idea

Marie you should try and come "down under' some time. Your fellow citizens who visit usually enjoy it here. Oh and by the way, Melbournians are quite refined, they don't blast their horns much ! I know what you mean of course.

Nice collection of images. I would like the see the first image cropped ever so slightly at the bottom to eliminate the clump of weeds about 1/3 from the image right. The weeds are popping out of nowhere. There is no ground to support them and my eye is perversely attracted to them.

I like the juxtaposition of the modern with the Victorian architecture in images #2 and #3. The horse drawn cart in Image #3 really makes the image for me...

The lines of the station and the street in image #3 direct my eye towards the front of the station. I would think that those lines might direct my eye away from the station front but, that is not what happens when I look at the image.

Thanks for your comments Richard. Good point about the crop for #1. I'll see what I can do. The horse drawn cart in #3 was a bonus!

They are all indeed terrific & can appeal to someone on the other side of the world, but equally to me here a short hop away down the highway.
The second with the different perspective, is my absolute favourite.

Just to add my compliments. For me, the 2nd and 3rd in the series, in particular, convey a great atmosphere of city life. I think that's because, I feel, we're 'in the scene' with all the hussle and bussle of city life going on around us.

    Thanks Donald

That's what I was aiming for, particularly with the second.

The 2nd and 3rd are good subjects, with the 2nd being a great shot. The 4th: photography ok, but what an ugly building! (I say that as a New South Welshman )

Thanks for commenting Greg. Actually a lot of Victorians don't like the Fed Square architecture either !

Do I have to say something about your comment? (Do you know why Canberra was put between Melbourne and Sydney?)
