    Bison Traffic Jam

This photo was taken this January in Yellowstone National Park. It was a cold, snowy, cloudy day. Good light for photographing bison. This herd was traveling down one of the groomed park roads. I was in a snow coach. I popped out of the top of the coach and began shooting. It is not common to get the opportunity to photograph a herd of bison in such a setting. I shot at a speed that was slow enough to get the action of the snow falling and the exhaled breath of the bison on the far left. I spent ten hours that day photographing and this is my favorite photo from the day.

Thank you Mike, John and John. It is challenging to shoot in the cold and snow out of an over-snow vehicle. But it is extremely rewarding. Just being there without a camera would be special.

That is a beauty, Chuck. I love the light and the muted tones. And the subject matter? Well, that it just glorious.

The way in which the lines of the trees at each side of the roadway take us back through the image, is wonderful.

    Great picture.

Thank you Leslie and Kyle. Kyle, you will see bison on your visit to YNP and Grand Teton National Park. I was out photographing this morning and had to wait for a herd of bison to cross the road.

You won't be able to avoid them. In fact, you need to be aware that they might be right outside your doorway in the morning. If that's the case, stay a long way away from them, as they are deceptively fast and very dangerous when they feel threatened.

I don't plan on getting too close to them if I can help it. I haven't seen any before so I'm excited to get some shots of them.

    Re: Bison Traffic Jam

Another nice one Chuck! Great use of framing with the trees to put emphasis on the herd. The wide view also helps to not cut off any of the visible herd.
