Mantis Macro
Mani came back for a visit so the opportunity was used to test my home made diffuser getting in real close with 68mm worth of extension tubes. First problem was a panic to make an extension to reach farther out, second problem was that I needed full power on the SB-600 and whatever variations in power and distance away I got highlights on his head or inadequate lighting. Gave up with it for this subject.
Ended up with just the SB-600 mounted on the camera fitted with its standard diffuser and 20mm of extension tube on the 105.
Both at 1/60s, f32

Comments and suggestions welcome as always and Mani says thanks for looking.

Re: Mantis Macro
You system seems to be working pretty well to me !
Wierdy enough just the other day I found one of Mani's relatives living behind the rear seats of my pick-up, I pulled the seats forward to retrieve a jump start cable to help a stranded traveller and 15 mins later I was driving along when I noticed something weird in the rear view mirror moving along the top of the rear seats ! I pulled over, opened the doors and windows and watched as he slowly exited the vehicle! I was on my way to pick up a pallet load of bags of plaster and did not have any cameras with me, sadly

Re: Mantis Macro
I have not knowledge about the camera setting for Macro. But the cropped Mani portrait really astonish me.

Re: Mantis Macro
Hi Hui,
The settings for macro are easy, no different than any other photography other than DoF is something you strive for in most instances. There is a misconception that very small apertures give unacceptable diffraction but I no longer take notice of this.

Re: Mantis Macro
David,
I will get the drawing for the diffuser tidied up today, write some instructions and contact you by PM (private message).
The sizes are designed to fit my Nikon SB-600 flash which has a rectangular head section of 40mm x 64mm.
Are you able to accept PDF format files?

Re: Mantis Macro
Hi Christina,
Thanks.
It was great to see him round again so I just could not resist the opportunity to get the gear out. The intention was to try and get both the eyes and mouth in focus this time which took a fair bit of manipulation and I need to find an easier and smoother way of moving a heavy flower pot sitting on newspaper around on the worktop.

Re: Mantis Macro
Wicked shots Grahame. The "facial expression" and pose are awesome. We've talked about this before: Pretty amazing how little appearance of diffraction there is in these for f/32 !!! Goes to show what happens when you downsize for web...I'd imagine there has to be some indication of it at 100% SOOC. Love em.

Re: Mantis Macro
Hi G., impressive! aside from superior skill and talent you also have seriously superior equipment compa5ed to my Finepix S4200?
In your opinion is there a bridge camera that can do this or is it time to think of joining the DSLR crowd

Re: Mantis Macro
All too technical for me, but I know I like both images. Great work.
