Hobbiton - New Zealand

Back home after two weeks touring the North Island of NZ had a good time; however, (and unfortunately) the weather wasn't the best so only had limited optortunities for some photography .

Anyway one of the places we visited was 'Hobitton' which is the set for the Lord of the Rings movies as well as the upcoming new movies.

Here are a few photos from the tour which was quite good -now I just have to watch the movies to see the set

Does that mean they've put Hobbiton on the North Island? I thought everyone knew that Middle Earth is on the South Island!!!

Thanks - 'Hobbitton' is near Matamata (sp??) on the North Island about 45 min out of Taurango and Hamilton.

I love the Lord Of The Rings movies, and these are excellent shots of the sets, but my favorite scenes in the movies are the ones that show the mountains. Did you get any shot of them?

Unfortunately no - I think those scenes were shot on the South Island and we didn't get there this time and out of 14 days of touring we had 12 days of rain and wind so I think even if I had seen them I think the weather would have been against me

This is my image of Middle Earth, taken looking towards Glenorchy where much of the filming was done. Sadly, due to an attack of stupidity, I lost the original image so this is taken from a scan of a print (so no C&C please!). I like the way that only the land in the foreground looks quite real.

The is nothing like rugged snow capped peaks, and the ones in NZ are amazing. Thanks for posting this, Dave. Oh yes...and I love that sky, too.
