The other image is a little brighter, Brian, but if you carefully examine the focus you will find that this one is sharper with all the petals well focused. There are a few soft spots with the alternative image.

Unless you are able to control your background there will always be some distraction, but this background is sufficiently blurred and subdued so it isn't a problem.

Amazing what's wrapped up in those buds. What a beautiful flower. I love the colour, and I think it's an excellent shot.

The ideal aperture for a scene like this, Brian will be a matter of trial and look at the results. It depends on what will give you an in focus main subject while blurring the background, and that depends on how far away is the background. I would probably start with F8 although if there wasn't any wind movement and the background was worryingly close I may drop to around F5.6 or even F4 and do a merge of two focus points. But that depends on the actual lens; I wouldn't want to shoot something like this with a wide open aperture.

If I was using my macro lens, with shallow focus depth, I wouldn't go wider than F8.

Photography , flying and life have a common reality. Some of it is science and some of it is art. I get the feeling I am moving into the art realm. Which is good to know. Thanks.
