Back home and getting up-to-speed
I've still to process the 3 or 4 I think are worth a second look, from my two weeks in Malaysia.
But before doing that I just wanted to get out in our winter weather and fire off some frames.
I know it can't really be seen on this small online, reduced version, but I'm very pleased with the detail I'm getting on the branches and twigs of the trees. This is with the Canon 100-400 f4.5-5.6 L IS MkII mounted on my 5DS.

I can't wait to see your images from Malaysia and to learn of your experiences there!
Interestingly, the gates on the left side of the image absolutely make it for me. Though I can't compare the image displayed here to the full-size image, there is considerable detail. Don't give all of the credit for that to the equipment; it's also surely due to the guy doing the post-processing.

Interesting, Donald, I just made a similar post regarding the detail I'm getting out of the D810. Glad you're enjoying the new kit. It's nice to be pleased with a decision after shelling out one's finances.
Nice image. Simple, nicely composed, and well executed. It must have been a shock coming home from Malaysia to that weather.

I am curious what your shooting technique will produce in the tropics.

Nicely captured, sharper than a Soho tart's tongue. Just wonder what you think about maybe trimming back a little of the empty sky above the tree? Not a whole lot. Just a 'whisker,' so to speak. But very nice framing. So, get your act together and get on with it Donald and roll out your Malaysian gems for us to enjoy!

Re: Back home and getting up-to-speed
A beautiful image. I have to say that my first reaction was the same as Ken's: worth considering chopping a bit off the top. On second thought, I thought no, it's probably deliberate because the line formed by the top of the tree goes right to the top left corner. On third thought, after reading Ken's posting, I pasted it into Irfanview and cropped a bit off the top to see. I think it is better with a crop.

I was thinking the same as Dan here about being in heavenly weather over there in Malaysia only to be confronted with the cold and snow in Scotland on your return. The only thing I can think of is that you got sick of the heat over there and wanted to cool off and sleep in your own bed...
Nice shot by the way, I like this composition very much...

Nice and crisp and even -and that's just the image. I like the simplicity of this Donald, both in terms of the composition and in terms of the tonal range.
