I'm not over keen on the left hand tower being cut off like that. Maybe show a bit more, or a bit less and crop the top and left side slightly? That would place more emphasis on the lamp.
And the bottom right corner is distracting to me. Either show more or none of that object and sign.
Part way up the castle wall at the same level as those two windows there is a pale blue spot. Possibly a person? Very small but quite noticeable to me.
In spite of those slight issues, I think there is a good scene to be had here.
Shape of the lightpost resembles that of the building, this shape consistency could be emphasized more if converted to black and white. In the color version, the vibrant flowers dominate the scene, with the lamp appearing as an afterthought and not much done to emphasize the building or sky. Sign at the bottom should be cloned out if possible.
Thanks again Geoff - Amazing how after this much looking at this photo, I never noticed either the person or the sign. Despite not having my tablet out, I was able to get rid of them in PS.
Tried cropping to pull out Left tower...not sure yet. For me it changes it a bit. I like the light off center.
I think this one would have been well served by me taking one or two steps backwards and getting in entire tower on left.
Yes, I agree this is probably one of those occasions where taking a number of shots from different positions to give more options would have been a good idea.
The crop does work for me, but as an alternative, how about a crop which is half way between this and the original image?
I agree with this. There are some interesting elements in this image and you have noticed and captured them. However, as it stands, it is difficult to make out what is supposed to be the point of interest. The castle is the novel element and the eye goes to it, but then there is a lamp post in the way, like someone wearing a hat at the theatre. The castle is also out of focus, suggesting that the lamppost is the point of interest.
The monochrome conversion helps, as it takes away some of the power of the flowers and the grass. However, I would have moved so that the lamp post frames rather than obscures, allowing the viewer to see a meaningful amount of the castle. It might have worked better to raise the viewpoint and set the lamppost lower. That depends on how long your arms are and how steady your stance. Or whether you thought to pack step ladders with you.
There are some good ideas in this.
Erik, the conversion works better for me...
I like it. I afree that the tiower should be cropped out though i also prefer the color version.
