    Dominion Observatory - Ottawa, Canada

I got up before sunrise to try to get a decent shot of the old Dominion Observatory. I got there just as the rising sun was "kissing" one of the side walls of the building.

I find that this shot works really well in B&W. It was taken with the Nikkor f/3.5 24mm T-S.

It's part of a sundial, so I decided to leave it in the shot and the shadow from the rod does show the time. The observatory was originally set up to provide accurate time measurements for the country, so it rather fits the theme.

That part actually looks better in the colour version.

    Very nice monochrome.

I wonder if lightening the part of the sundial being discussed would improve it. Whether the color or monochrome versions are being viewed, I would need an explanation that that area of the scene is a sundial. As hard as we try, sometimes the image itself doesn't tell the entire story very well and I think this sundial is a good example of that.

I prefer the B&W version - the extraneous signs of the 21st century are not so distracting in than in the colour.

Monochrome for me. Makes the building's texture and construction jump out.

I knew right off it was a sundial gnomon. Not just to be contrary but I say keep it. It suits the time of construction.

With the conservative government's hatred of all things scientific; are we going back to using that sundial as our national timepiece?
