The River Thames in yet more Flood

I have tried to make a dull scene more colourful and punchy by adding a little tone mapping. Have I succeeded?

It looks fine to me Chris. I'm not seeing anything related to vibrancy or the tell-tale effects of tone mapping that indicate any issues. The way I look at images is that the question of why something doesn't look or feel right should never come up. An image should be able to be enjoyed and appreciated for what it is and the process should never be obvious. In this case if you hadn't mentioned tone mapping I wouldn't have considered it. Whew! What a long winded way of saying, yes, IMHO you've succeeded!

I do see a bit of blue where blacks should be (closest bench, under the bridge, here and there among the boats). Don't know if that is a factor of tone mapping or not.

Other than that, you guys had alot of rain!!!!!

if anything is dull perhaps it's the sky, but the subject is anything but dull.

Looks good to me Chris. As with many in CIC I'm not a fan of HDR when it's overdone for the sake of it but here it's not in your face and adds to the image. As for the floods, thankfully we are not seeing them up in the NW and can only sympathise. There's a lot of misery around. The only happy people probably live on houseboats.

Although I can show you a couple of examples moored on Thames at Windsor that might disagree (from December's floods), but I agree, the chap at work that is moored on a local canal (fixed water level) seemed happy enough yesterday

The shot works for me too Chris, in fact if anything, I was going to query the second wrought iron bench, that one is just grey, perhaps it is still in primer/undercoat?

I hope your home is not at risk (or worse) Chris?

    Regards,
    Dave
