I have no idea how many Portrait Sittings, Ken is commissioned for each month - but I have two or three - and I don’t shoot each frame from 15 feet away and using very fast Prime lenses,
    Hi Bill,

I have to agree, vive la difference.

Guess this guy does a few more than two portrait shoots every month. I am pretty much inclined to following his advice. http://www.johanpretorius.co.za/inde...s/portfolio-2/

Check out his arsenal of lenses!

I’ll ask him how often he uses a 50mm lens for portraits.

That seems to make sense. Not my personal opinion but the opinion of portrait pro's. Cannot differ from a pro making a good living from shooting portraits!

Very good advice, you should take note Jimmy.

    Hi AB,

    1. Specifically, what is his “advice” which you will follow?
    2. I’d be interested to know the answer to the 50mm lens question you ask him – please share that here.
    3. If you want to talk real world: a lens "arsenal" as you put it - means not all that much.

Notwithstanding this side chat, which is interesting and fun - but rather off the topic.

When you do seek advice from Mr Pretorius, as you have now stated that you will: then do ask about using 50/1.8 Prime on a Nikon APS-C (not his Nikon Cameras) - 'cause that's what the thread and the O.P. is all about.

I posted him a request and will be back as soon as I have an answer from him.

Short and sweet: 70-200mm. Yes even for my D200.

And for completeness – what exactly was the text of the question you sent to him?

Gee he was very prompt answering your questions in less than 2 hours. You must have got him at a time when he wasn't shooting and at his computer or mobile device and reading his correspondence: as you mentioned he appears to be pretty busy most of the time.

It's strange that Mr Pretorius doesn't list a D200 in his "arsenal" - but rather that he lists that he uses 4 cameras - two Nikon D4 and two Nikon D800.

No great surprise in that response. I think I would get the same answer from every pro that I know. Canon and Nikon sell lots of these lenses to the pro portrait photographers, in spite of the high price tag.
