6 of the Hottest New Models - is it just me , or ...

I probably missed my true vocation in life (really hot male model!), but looking at these 6 hottest new models, something strikes me as being somewhat "sad" and "disconnected from reality" about the industry. Can't quite put it into words. What do you good folks think?

I agree with what you said. The type of catwalk model that your link shows is unappealing to me. Reminds of some sort of china doll that you would smash if you dared touch it. The "grumpy" "you must not smile" look is also overdone in my humble opinion.

I think the industry is constantly looking for a new look.
Reading the 'glossy's'' on a Sunday you see pages of these models, some well shot others not so and personally I like the image they are portraying. Gone to some extent is the massively Photoshopped (though they still are) flawless, you will never achieve this perfection and in its place is a more down to earth one.
Fashion is fickle and the next 'look' will be just around the corner. I for one look forward to seeing it and the photographers making the best of it.

I would rather photograph glass; the subject is similarly austere and it never complains about anything.

Robin, I know what you mean, but to me these are almost a case of "breaking the rules for the sake of breaking the rules" which is in and of itself fine, but when people do that they then have to come up with an image that works (or they should have followed the rules!). To me these are images that break the rules, but they just don't work having done that. To me they just look "freakish", unappealing, and un-flattering.

Most of them look as though they don't like their job (as in p----- off).

But then, who would like that job?

Heroin Chic was a label applied to models in the 90's. Drawn, haggard faces, dark circles under the eyes, dark eye liner, gaunt angular faces. That was my impression of the link you supplied. In no way implying that the model is an addict and supplied a link about her losing a huge amount of weight: Models have to be skinny. Losing 36kg and becoming a model is almost a cliche.

Sorry - I think we're talking at cross purposes here. When you said "Heroin chic...and she only had to lose 36kg to become a model" I took that to mean you were saying that she used heroin.

I think the look you describe is still very much alive and well, unfortunately. I call it the "goth" look; I've shot dozens of young women in my studio and almost invariably they do their own makeup which starts with poorly applied foundation (and far too much of it) and ends with far too much eyeliner (which the camera really picks up on).

I am not sure there is anything new about this trend if you can call the ultra-thin, pouty look a trend at this point. Just remember, this is not high school senior portraits or even portraits of any kind. It is fashion. The women are simply putty to the vision of the designer. It is hard to say if they are attractive or not and that is not the point once the look has been painted on. In Hollywood, the discovered starlet has to have some identity beneath the role that creates a certain Q-rating. These models are essentially anonymous and the blankness of the look means the general public will not identify with a persona--just the design. If they smiled, we might like them and that is to be avoided.

It depends on what, as in the case of one of the selections-the casting director, is looking for. Is the industry looking for faces, coat hanger frames, or are they just marketing a look and hoping the fashion industry buys into it. There were a few models from the selection that had eye catching faces, but do facial features sell clothes, I don't know.
