Cycling: some shot from a local race.

    Hi,
last sunday I was "hired" from the local organization to make photos at the local race... in the role of "official" photographer (hired and official but for free, free like in "free beer" ).
Here is some shot from the race.

    About to start...
Cycling: some shot from a local race.

Climbing the slope before a bridge...
Cycling: some shot from a local race.

    ...and getting down from it
Cycling: some shot from a local race.

    Crossing the finishing line
Cycling: some shot from a local race.

    Hope you like them.

    Bye

I do, I do. That's a very good set. Well done. Good vibrant colour. And you capture the vibrancy of the event.

These are really great! There's such a sense of place, mood, emotion, energy - the day. Very exciting. They take me there. Well done!

@Donald, Willie, Katy: Thank you all for your nice feedback!

@Mary: Yes, I confirm there's a lot of work for the cyclist and his family. In february we organized another race. We get a cold and rainy day... it's incredible how hard a cycling race could become! Have shot from it, if interested I could post them.

@Martyn: You are right, a wider aperture will be absolutely better... but I have to fight with the limits of my equipment: this time the race finished on a head to head, with a speed at the finish line of about 45 km/h (about 28 mph)... the AFC isn't able to follow accurately the subject so I compensate with a greater DOF.

I tried to photograph the Tour de France when I was on holiday in the French Pyrenees a couple of years ago. This was just a few months after I had got my 40D. I though I could stand at the roadside and produce wonderful images with blurred backgrounds, full of colour and excitement.

My efforts were a pathetic, miserable failure. So, I greatly admire the skill in producing the above set of images. Not easy.

What a great job! If you keep at this, one day around this same time in a year or so, you'll be taking photos of the Paris Roubaix instead.....paid.

Now that's something to aspire to.

ntx i dont know what equipment you use, AFC will only follow your subject if you have certain parameters met in the rest of your settings, i always use AFC when shooting moving subjects, most of the time they are in my main central focus point , if they move out of that pont then i have lost them, what i do do is continually track them in the centre focus pont,
if you switch to area dynamic mode it could track them better, it will follow you subject throughout the frame but its not foolproof, 3D tracking is another optrion, cheers martyn

    Hi Jenner,

These are wonderful shots. I am also the 'official' (read un-paid) photographer for my brother's cycling team so I enjoy viewing these types of photos to get ideas. Thanks for sharing.

I love the bike! It reminds me of the time I was a child, I often went to see cyclists around Guom Lake, Hanoi.
