My original plan was to make a black and white photograph of the pebble, but after re-shooting, I became rather fond of the creamy colour.

if I were you I would try to shoot the stone using macro. isolate a part of it, and make the viewer to question what it is.

framing is a little tight for me and I think it could benefit from some more interesting lighting to create a bit more interest?

I like the idea of a macro shot. The trouble is, I only have a standard 50mm lens so there is only so much enlargement I can do. The next item on my shopping list is a reversing ring. I will then try a macro shot.

Can you suggest a lighting technique I can use? At the moment, I am just using natural light from two corner-windows. If I introduce more shadow, I lose some of the detail.

For start and without the hassle of buying new equipment you can try to crop your image in photoshop.
If your image is of a qood quality and size cropping will have no effect on the quality of the picture.
I would try the middle of the photo where the best focus is located.

The initial image was cropped to start with. I had to re-shoot and was on the edge of was possible with my kit.

I will try again when I get a reversing ring.

Hi Peter, difficult to say... In my mind I was thinking of using a single source, low down to create some harsh shadows on the boundary. I thought they may look good but fact is that it's one of those things you would just need to play with. I have to say the close up looks pretty good!
