How the heck did I do this?

OK, blonde I must be. I have been trying to add a nice soft edged drop shadow to some photos and had looked on the interwebs, but couldn't find a tute that seemed to make sense. (More blondness) Today, after much fumbling and back and forwarding in PS, I finally managed to do it.

How the heck did I do this?

So, after a short lunch, I tried to repeat myself, but do you think I could? I could only remember that it involved creating a second, white layer and increasing the canvas size, but the actual production of a shadow eludes me. I can get to the drop shadow box, but can't get the shadow to appear.
I did manage to get one with a harsh shadow edge, but it wasn't what I wanted and now I can't get any. And I haven't even had my first gin.

    Any and all suggestions welcome.

    Hi Kit,

Ctrl + A (to select the entire image)

Select -> Save Selection (give it any old name)

    Edit -> Stroke | 3 px, Black, Normal, 50%

Image -> Canvas size | 50 px, 50 px (or to suit) Relative | White

Ctrl + J (to duplicate the layer)

Switch off bottom layer (so you can see what you're doing in the next few steps)

Select -> Load Selection | Invert (and choose name you chose before)

E (for eraser), erase white border (should be selected)

    Switch bottom layer on again

Double Click top layer thumbnail, tick "Drop Shadow", and click on "Drop Shadow"

Make angle 135 deg, Distance 13, Size 8 (or vary to suit)

    "Job Done"

    Kit

You can do it easily in FLICKR.

    • Go to 'edit in Picnik' after selecting shot.
    • Select 'create'
    • Add dark border of 3px
    • Add drop shadow and adjust sliders to suit

    here's one I just did

    Next option:
open the image.make a layer copy (layer -> duplicate layer
go to image -> canvas size and make the canvas size by a few cm or 1 inch in height and width
Go to Layer -> layerstyle and dash on the drop-shadow and stroke.
Selecting drop-shadow you can play with the angle and intensity and size of the shadow.
Selecting stroke you can play with the size of the stroke and colour.
flatten image and you are done.
    piece of cake

I've done it for the first time using PSE7

    What is stroke?
    Drop Shadow is in effects.
This already had a border but it was just for fun.

Kit, I have pointed several people on here to THIS a bit long winded but I have it down to a few seconds in GIMP. I have never encountered a dumb blonde yet....except maybe Boris Johnson

    Hi Steve,

It puts a line around the inside, outside, either side of a selection.

Blondes have more fun, usually at my expense

Just messing about trying to get a drop shadow in PSE7 Kay. Never tried before since I already have a program that does it but maybe not as good. I think this is the exclusion blending method with some opacity. Yep sure is with 50% opacity.
