    Light Pillars image

I ran across some interesting images of a natural phenomena called "light pillars" where ice crystals suspended in the air reflect either natural or artificial light into long pillars that stretch into the sky.

This is a new one on me. I've heard of "sun dogs" that are also created by ice crystals in the air.

Has any out there in CiC land run across and photographed either?

Manfred, they were very common to see when we lived in Fairbanks. Streetlights were a common place to see them. Looked like spotlights shining straight up. I assume due to the light hitting the snow on the ground directly beneath the light and reflecting straight up through the suspend ice crystals. I was always amazed that it formed a column of light rather than a broader effect.

Just saw these on the weather chanel but had not heard of them before today. Would be interesting to see them for real.
