    Tamron 16-300 - Opinions sought

Sorry I had to hang onto this thread because I never remember how to start a new one.

I have seen that TAMRON is coming out with a new lens 16-300mm which seems to have got quite good reviews. I own Tamron lenses 90mm and 70-200mm f/2.8 and I am quite happy with both of them.

As I am not so mobile any more due to an accident ( cannot use my right leg properly), it would be nice to have just one all-round lens when you travel. Question is how much is the quality degraded in such a lens ? With today's superb software help, one can correct a lot that has been degraded due to a slightly inferior lens?
    Would appreciate some professional guidelines.

    Cheers/Patrik

Patrik - this is really a new topic, so I have put this into a new thread.

The first question would be which camera are you planning to use the lens on?

I bought one recently (5 weeks).
On a canon its a great single lens, especially if paired with Canon's 10-18mm.

HOWEVER It has severe pincushion and other distortions. These can be partially corrected, but this does mean some loss of the picture area.

The macro is great, and for subjects where the distortion is not so important its a reasonable performer, so for flowers and natural history subjects its ideal. The stablisation works well.

For architecture forget it, for landscapes with horizons forget it.

I looked yesterday at the Canon 18-200 as a comparison. This Canon lens is much surperior in terms of control of distortion, but is not so wide or long or so light.

So is it worth buying - well its good in a bag with a compact wide angle and maybe the standard zoom. In the bag for its macro capabilities, excellent close focus performance, it is a compact long zoom. As the single lens to carry - depends on what you photograph.

Thank you Loosecanon. I got a good idea of what it does and doesn't do.

Have you considered a Bridge Camera?

I was wondering about the same thing! The small sensor might have problems in high ISO but, there is a hotshoe and the creative use of a flash will often make up for a lack of high ISO capability.

The constant f/2.8 aperture in some of the better bridge cameras certainly beats the tail off the f/6.3 aperture at the long end of the Tamron.

The equivalent wide side of this lens is around 25mm as is the wide side of many of the bridge cameras.
