    Week 32 & 33

In the end, my holiday was too full of physical activity to do as much shooting as I had intended and most of what I did was with the Sony RX100M4 pocket camera. It has its limitations, including its telephoto range (top end of 70mm), and it has taken time to find my way through the menu options, but it is capable of producing some surprisingly satisfying images. I made a major discovery in Week 33 when I switched from Aperture 3 to the Capture One Express program for Sony to do my processing. As I might have anticipated given that Capture One has Sony's propriety algorithms, the difference in the quality of the RAW conversion is huge. After spending a week playing with it, I decided to give the Pro version a try and see if I might want to adopt it as my replacement for Aperture after all. I have not exactly cottoned onto Lightroom, but I love Capture One's colour rendering and it is more intuitive for us die-hard Aperture users.

Anyhow, here is a selection of shots with the Sony.

One final note: I spent a memorable evening with my nieces from Alberta and some of their friends shooting flash against the ambient light of the sunset. The evening started as a kind of beach fashion shoot, with my youngest niece posing and the eldest one shooting her (my old) D90 on my tripod, with me serving as assistant, holding the flash off camera. When the other kids joined us, we shot a bunch of group shots. I had never done such a thing, but we were really quite delighted with the results and I am hoping we can do some more this weekend, this time with reflectors and modifiers.

    C&C welcome.

A mixture of scenes but they all work well and are nicely composed.

#1 is my favourite. Love the timing of the capture of the spray. Well done!

    Week 34

This is latest crop of sailing photos. I was hoping to get a little more creative, but the wind was up, and most of the time I was just trying not to fall out of the boat. At one point, I had to finally put the camera away and do my bit as a crew member. Winching the jib in is hard work.

#7 I don't think this really works as an image, but you can see I was trying. (Those are my brother-in-law's legs, btw, not mine.)

I like 3 and 6, Janis. 3 might work well in b&w, too.

It looks good to me, Janis. Nice work on the conversion, its tricky work with all those highlights.

Thanks, Greg. I wanted to draw more attention to bit of sun peeking round, so I applied a yellow filter to increase contrast in the sky and then slightly darkened the brightest spots in the upper left corner and lower portions of the sail. This better captures the tonal contrasts that I was seeing when I pressed the shutter.
