The time has come. Ordered the Tamron 90mm (272)

Hi all, first a thank you to one and all who helped me to make up my mind on the lens. And an even bigger thank you to those who suggested ways for me to buy it. It took a while and there were a lot of dead ends but finally a suggestion from one of you sent me in the right direction.

I am dealing directly with the national distributor for Tamron in the Philippines. As hard to believe as this is a Tamron 90 for a Sony Alpha mount is a special order. Nobody in the Philippines stocks them.

When I contacted Tamron Japan they suggested I talk to the national distributor. He does not do COD. But Tamron Japan says to trust him, my wife talked to him on the phone and after almost 20 emails we have a working arrangement. We put 30% upfront, he orders. When it gets here he checks out the lens and tests it, we send the rest and he ships it down.

A little more complicated than walking over to your local camera shop but such is life where we live.

Also a little slower. Not expecting it much before the end of June.

And a lot cheaper. About half the price from America or Canada.

Now to work on patience and serenity.

    Congratulations Brian,

As good as you have become in close-up photography, I am sure that you will find it a lot easier to work with a true macro lens...

I find that a monopod with a tilt head or a swivel head is another good implement for close-up work...

There's another accessory that's good for an old man like me...

Some type of seat to get these old bones down to a lower level when needed.

I use a folding three legged stool which is quite light but, since you do a great deal of your photography in your garden, just about any old chair will do.

I fold the legs in on my tripod for an instant monopod, I use a plastic stool and we are putting in a lot of raised flower beds. I am curious how things will change.

Good choice Brian. I bought this lens some time ago and really love it - so sharp. One thing I discovered as a macro novice is how shallow the depth of field is (generally 1-2 cm), particularly when close to the subject and even with very narrow aperture. I now use an iPhone app called DOF Master to get a handle on the DOF before I shoot. Focus stacking in Photoshop is another tool to improve the overall sharpness when DOF is so shallow, but overall a lovely lens.

Brian, as a relative new comer around here, I've watched your progress with your camera with interest. You have come a long ways and, based on my experience with just dabbling around with my equipment, I look forward to seeing your next progression. I wish I had the dedication to the art of photography you do.

I'm not so sure it is dedication to the art of photography as it pure enjoyment and amazement with the universe the camera allows me to enter.

I will admit, I'm amazed at some of the things I'm able to see with my camera. It has far better vision than I do when it comes to the tiny stuff.

I'm glad to hear that you have ordered it. Given your interest in macro and all the work you are putting into that kind of photography, and the very substantial progress you are making in your macro work, I suspect that this lens will be a big help to you and that you will enjoy it a great deal. Congratulations.
