    Good news

    Hi everyone,

I haven't had much opportunity to post here lately as life keeps getting in the way. In B.C. London Drugs and Black Press (these folks produce the local news papers) were hosting a photo competition for B.C. residents. The competition is "Next Generation Photographer of the Year". I entered 5 images, which was the max allowed, and I was informed a few days ago that I have been chosen as one of the finalists. Out of 2357 entries to be chosen as one of 70 finalists I am really impressed. Round 2 consists of photographing the Abbotsford Airshow, Aug 7-9, from images submitted from that the winners will be chosen.

I still have a very long way to go in my photography but I have also come a long way. A whole lot of my improvement has come from getting feedback on this site. Thank you for all of the help!

    Re: Good news

Good news is always related to being pregnant for me...so my first thought when I saw your title I thought ..."she's pregnant!" oh well...even if it is another kind of anticipation, IT IS TRULY good news, Rita. Congratulations! You've done very well indeed. Even to be a finalist can be exciting...to say the least...I would have jumped up and down and wore the carpet out too from excitement...

We'll pray for you ... go get 'em Tiger!!!

    Re: Good news

Congratulations... We are rooting for you!

Here's an idea... Everyone will be shooting the aircraft at the airshow. Although flying planes are beautiful, the can actually get a bit boring.

I might, if I were in a competition to shoot an airshow, try some way to incorporate the crowd into your pictures.

Here's one idea: Purchase a large pair of dark sunglasses (preferably with relatively plain frames). Conscript a beautiful young lady to wear the glasses as a group of planes fly by. Photograph the planes as a reflection in the sunglasses!

Being a female photographer, you have the advantage in that very possibly other females will trust you.

There are probably many other ways of incorporating the crowd into your imagery. How about a couple of kids with their mouths open in awe as the planes go by. Perhaps waving the Maple Leaf Flag or other airshow memorabilia...

Another way I might think of is to shoot from a raised location behind the crowd and shoot the planes as they go by with the crowd in the foreground...

Another idea is to look up a few of Dubai Phil's recent posts. He has done some great stuff at a recent U.K. airshow...

One final thought is to look through past issues of the publication and see what types of imagery is favored.

    Re: Good news

    Thanks Dan.

Richard, thank you for the wonderful feedback, much appreciated. When we do the airshow there are 4 categories that we are required to shoot and enter images for. They are for best inflight, best ground/static, best crowd shot, and the other category will be given to us each day. All of the finalists have VIP access so we will have prime viewing as well as at certain times we will have access of closeups of the planes as well. You have given me some good ideas here and I will try to implement them.
