    As for learning what distance to focus at for various small objects? Far better is to get a camera with good selective single spot focusing and learn how to use AF instead of this archaic practice of manual focusing. Only cameras I know with this are Panasonic MFTs G3 and GH2. .... they also have the multi spot system which is good for snap shots but hardly for controlled focusing.
    But each to their own ... which comes from personal experience.

    I made a VERY simple Rotary Focus Adjuster (my own name). I used a 3/4" wide X 1/8" aluminum bar - in my case @ 6" long. Drilled and tapped a hole near one end for the tripod screw, and another at the other end for the camera. This way, I can simply rotate the bar around the tripod, which will give my about a foot of adjustment area. Very Simple.
