    Northern Flicker

I shot these images this morning from my kayak. These are normally very difficult birds to get near. When approaching from the water side I believe they do not think of you as a predator as much as when you approach from the land side.

Thanks everyone for the comments. It was overcast and almost raining, I find the light so much better on days like this.

Fantastic bird, how awsome are those colours and the overdast light would have helped I think. Really great images Monte.

Wonderful birds, and simply beautifully captured!

Compared to the Flickers down our way yours have a bit of violet where ours would be neutral. Is that you, or mother nature?

It seems he's posing for you! Great job!

Do you find that the birds are more accepting of your presence when you're in the kayak?

Yes very much so. I have found with most birds that they do not consider you as predator as much when approaching from the water side as opposed to approaching from the land. I have paddled right up close to a Bald Eagle without even realizing it and the bird made no attempt to leave. I slowly backed off and continued on my way and all was well.

Just stunning! Flickers are always on my list, but as you said, they are quite skittish. I don't think I've ever seen a better photo of a flicker.

    Re: Northern Flicker

I have done enough bad bird photography to realise how stunning these are.

Tough enough in a hide on a tripod, but from a kayak! Sheesh! Fantastic.
