Formal Portrait of a Beauty - C&C Welcome

Sorry everyone... one more. My model felt like posing last night so I couldn't pass up the opportunity. In addition, my husband gave me an Ice Light, so I wanted to give it a try. Today during my mentoring session, I learned how to enhance her eyes just a smidgen without using saturation.

This one is really nice Kim. Good comp, spot on techs, subject nicely isolated. My only other comment is that the linear catch light looks odd.

Thanks for your comments Dan. Yes, I noticed that as well. Will need to figure out how to minimize that. Something to work on next time she decides to model; maybe I need a model with smaller eyes ;-)

Very classy portrait Kim, you've got that DoF spot on well done.

As for the catch-light, it can be manipulated but I often wonder what the 'ideal' is. Some I get when using flash with my tiny critters are quite odd looking.

    Nice shot, Kim.

Lovely portrait of your cat. Daylight LED lighting is wonderful! The Ice Light really adds a nice touch.

    Excellent pose
I've seen those Ice lights and have wondered if the expense would be worth it. If you could keep us posted on how you like using it for your different lighting situations, I've no doubt some others might enjoy hearing your views
Thanks and keep these fantastic pics coming

Nicely done, Kim -- I agree with others about the linear lighting. I would like the answer to Roger's comment as I am still learning about lighting at the moment, well...when I get back home that is...The pose shows a nice grumpy look there but it is beautifully done...kudos!

Thanks for your comments Grahame. I'll have to keep an eye on the catch lights and see if I find the same thing - thanks for mentioning.

Thank you for taking the time to comment Marie. So far, I am enjoying the light - I like that i can adjust the amount of light, hook it up to a tripod, transport it easily, and work off battery or plugged in.

Thank you for commenting Roger. I will keep you all posted, and will be sure to mention in posts, if it was used as the light source.

Thanks for commenting Izzie. I think whether it's worth the cost is a personal opinion. With my arm issues, this works well... It's light, not cumbersome, easy for me to transport, can use it hand held or on a tripod, and it doesn't take up a lot of room in my house (I don't have a room dedicated to photography). I am hoping all the conveniences of it, will also give me nice light. So far, I like it. :-)

I agree that this is a lovely portrait of a beautiful cat. The rectangular catchlight doesn't bother me a bit. Rectangular catchlights don't bother me since they are often products of window light.

However, since the shape of the catchlight seemed to bother some folks, I played with the catchlight in CS6 and reduced the size considerably using a combination of the spot healing brush and clone stamp tools working at high magnification. It seems to work...

Nice one, Kim. Also thanks for teaching me about ice lights, as I had never heard of them.

I noticed the small aperture, small depth of field and focal length. It's clear that you were very close to the princess and that she feels comfortable with you being so close.

Glad you learned something new from me Mike :-)

Mia is the bravest of our three cats -- she pretty much lets me do anything to her, and she loves to pose for me. She's a sweetheart.

Here's one more of Mia with the Ice Light. This one is an artistic rendering; it's tones remind me of an old fashion oil painting (sans the underwear she is sitting on ;-) She loves sitting on clean laundry.)
