    FX lens on DX body?!

I am wanting to get the AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/4G ED VR (a FX lens) for my NIKKOR D5100 (DX body)

will the FX lens work on my DX body?

If it does work will their be any drawbacks?

If their are drawbacks how noticeable will they be?

I will be photographing landscape, wildlife, and portraits

No issues at all, Adrian. The lens will work just fine. One of my favourite lenses when I shoot my old D90 is the Nikkor f/2.8 24-70mm lens; also a FX lens. I have the Nikkor f/2.8 70-200mm lens (also a FX lens), but find I rarely use this focal length on the DX body; it's just not a range I tend to use on it. On the D800, I probably do about 40% of my images with it.

I only ever used FX lenses on my DX D200. The only draw back was they were heavier than the equivalent DX lens and generally cost more. At the ultra wide angle end (say less than 18mm) there is possibly a wider range of DX lens and they will be cheaper.

If you ever intend to move to a FX camera having a selection of FX lenses certainly makes the move less costly.

Adrian the only thing I can add is to have a close look at how the focal length range will suit your photography. For me, the wide end (70mm equiv to 105mm on a crop camera) would be a bit long for landscape and portraits and the long end (300mm ff equiv) would be a bit short for wildlife. Great lens though.
