I see these cameras frequently advertised, and seem to have a bit of a following.
What is it about them that presumably makes them popular?

I have no real desire to get one but have seen some fantastic videos made with footage from them. In fact this past Halloween someone attached one to a pumpkin that was catapulted into a field is what has become quite a fad called "Pumpkin Chunkin" in the US. The footage was kind of cool if a bit dizzying but I never heard if the go pro survived the landing...

I also am seeing many cyclists (motor and pedal) who use them attached to their helmets as they drive about. I think that part of this is to protect themselves and have evidence should they ever be involved in an accident rather that creating cool videos but I could be wrong.

We have three of them attached to one of our little airplane. I've uploaded a video here of our little corgi riding our plane for the first time with my stepson. It made the AOPA website the other week...they are handy little things....good for reviewing what goes wrong inside and out of the plane if any -- just like any other tool in the car for instance, like a dash cam. They have a purpose. When we just have one of them, my stepson used to attach it to Huey and say we were looking a view from the dog's point of view. Crazy but funny at times.

I have seen videos in which a fisherman attached the camera to his rod for a video of fighting the fish...
